MEA is heavily used in natural gas processing and refineries to remove acidic gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). This process is called gas sweetening. MEA reacts chemically with these gases, helping purify natural gas and refinery streams.

2. Detergents and cleaning products
It acts as a surfactant and pH adjuster in liquid detergents, industrial cleaners, and degreasers. MEA helps stabilize formulations and improve cleaning efficiency, especially in heavy-duty applications.

3. Chemical intermediate
MEA is a building block for producing other chemicals such as:
